Thrust Carbon is the First Company Assured to ISO Methodology in Travel

Thrust Carbon is the first ISO 14083 assured methodology in travel, giving customer confidence in the face of incoming climate regulations

Written by Kit Aspen on 18 July, 2024

We are thrilled to announce that Thrust Carbon has become the first — and only — company worldwide to have our methodologies assured to the comprehensive carbon accounting standard for the travel industry, ISO 14083. This milestone is a huge win for us and our clients, giving everyone confidence in meeting disclosure requirements within the upcoming climate regulations.

What is ISO 14083?

Released just last year, ISO 14083 has quickly established itself as the global benchmark for collecting, calculating, and reporting greenhouse gas emissions from travel and transport activities. This standard is a game-changer, making carbon calculations clear, understandable, and repeatable, and often resolving disagreements between methodologies over chosen approaches.

"ISO 14083, as endorsed by the European Commission in its CountEmissionsEU proposal, is set to become the internationally recognized standard for transport emissions accounting across all modes of transport"

- Delphine Millot, SVP for Sustainability & Advocacy and Managing Director of the GBTA Foundation

Why This Matters

The European Commission has already adopted ISO 14083 for its upcoming CountEmissionsEU initiative, and many experts see it as the perfect assurance seal for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which will impact 50,000 businesses (want to know if you're one of them? Use our free discovery tool today). With this milestone, we're ensuring that the $100bn of annual global travel spend that touches our data is well-prepared for the evolving regulatory landscape.

The Impact

ISO 14083 is critical because the CSRD, taking effect from 2025, will require carbon accounts to meet strict accuracy thresholds and be independently verified. Our achievement of ISO 14083 assurance provides that much-needed seal of approval when our clients submit CSRD claims to their assurers, significantly reducing the risk of fines, accusations of greenwashing, and reputational damage.

"For years, customers have been worried about which methodology is 'correct' for their business. This landmark ISO assurance puts that to rest, enabling companies to use leading carbon calculations with confidence"

- Kit Aspen, Founder at Thrust Carbon

What This Means for Existing Customers

The new standard is available to existing customers through all Thrust Carbon tools, including Thrust Data (our API), Thrust Calculator, Thrust Engage, Thrust Events, and Thrust Advisory. We encourage all clients to switch, but you may want to time this in concert with existing reporting events in your business. We suggest talking to your Thrust Carbon account manager to discuss the right time to do this for your business.

Leading the Industry

We've achieved ISO assurance for many of our methodologies, including our flagship ones, offering our clients and their end-auditors unique options for their emissions calculations. LRQA, a global authority in standards assurance, has meticulously verified and assured us for full compliance.

This achievement reinforces our commitment to leading the industry in environmental responsibility. We're proud to be paving the way for more transparent and reliable carbon accounting in the travel sector. Thank you to our clients and partners for their continued support. Here's to many more milestones ahead!
