Rail Delivery Group (RDG), the organization responsible for coordinating Britain’s railways, collaborated with Thrust Carbon to develop a new way of analysing the railway system’s carbon footprint. Previously, estimates were based on annual country-wide calculations that did not fully capture the nuances of real rail travel.
Our advanced methodology incorporated real-time factors such as engine and fuel type, occupancy rates, carriage layout, and precise journey distances, offering a far more granular insight into emissions. Contrary to previous estimates, our analysis indicated that rail travel's carbon emissions were significantly lower than previously estimated (on certain lines). In fact, our findings demonstrated that rail travel emitted far less carbon compared to car travel and was substantially more efficient than air travel.
This work was the origin of the Green Travel Pledge, A new commitment by the rail industry to provide detailed, accurate and reliable data on the carbon emissions of rail journeys.
