Thrust Carbon reveals 80+ new emission factors to enable accurate emissions reporting before fuel reaches the tank

Written by Andrea Bonaiuto on 22 February, 2024

Thrust Carbon, the leading provider of sustainability intelligence tools for the travel industry, today announced the launch of its groundbreaking dataset, offering unparalleled insight into aviation fuel emissions from extraction, refinement and transport, also known as “well-to-tank” fuel emissions.

Every year, unreported well-to-tank emissions add up to as much as 202 million tonnes CO2e. This dataset in Thrust Calculator improves accuracy by as much as 19% compared to the second leading dataset, DEFRA. This is a significant leap forward in the accurate calculation of carbon emissions, empowering businesses to align with international regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in Europe.

A New Standard in Emission Calculation

Historically, businesses have relied on limited data focusing primarily on 'tank-to-wheel' emissions. Thrust Carbon's dataset shifts the paradigm by including 'well-to-tank' emissions, encompassing the full journey of aviation fuel from extraction, through refining and transportation. This comprehensive approach provides a more accurate picture of the environmental impact of aviation fuel, accounting for as much as 20% of an overall flight’s emissions.

Global Coverage, Local Precision

Thrust Carbon's new dataset fills this gap with detailed emission factors for over 80 nations, delivering an industry-first level of detail and accuracy. Emissions can vary by as much as 19% between countries due to differences in infrastructure and extraction methods, so calculating to the country-level is critical for accurate reporting. Unfortunately, legacy providers only use single ‘well-to-tank’ multipliers, such as the UK-specific factors published by DEFRA, for flights on a global basis.

Seamless Integration and Support

Existing Thrust Carbon customers can easily enable the new factors in their systems, with the option to perform back-calculations and receive an indicative report on whether rebaselining is necessary. The process is designed to be user-friendly, efficient, and informative, all accessible at the click of a button.

A Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

"You wouldn’t treat a small propeller plane the same as a 747, but this is the approach legacy providers take for well-to-tank emissions. Our dataset is the first step in changing this ineffective standard," said Kit Aspen, Founder at Thrust Carbon. "Thrust Carbon’s new dataset is a testament to our commitment, offering businesses a tool to make more informed decisions and contribute positively to the global sustainability effort."

Why travel managers and companies will care

Because Thrust Carbon's dataset offers precise WTT emissions data for over 80 countries, companies can enable compliance with Science Based Targets (SBTi) and other anticipated reporting requirements, like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in Europe. This data also enables travel managers to optimize itineraries for lower environmental impacts by selecting layover cities factoring that nation’s WTT profile. Similarly, individual travelers can make informed choices about their flights, aligning their travel decisions with their company’s travel policies and sustainability goals.

In an era where sustainability is not just a preference but a necessity, Thrust Carbon's latest dataset is a game-changer, offering unprecedented transparency and accuracy in the measurement of aviation fuel emissions.
