FAQs
Answers to common questions about Thrust Carbon's products, emissions methodologies, and compliance tools.
Products & Platform
What does Thrust Carbon do?
Thrust Carbon is a Travel Intelligence Platform for enterprise business travel. It helps organisations accurately measure travel emissions, reduce costs, influence traveller behaviour, and meet regulatory reporting requirements.
What products does Thrust Carbon offer?
Thrust Carbon offers six core products:
- EngageAI — real-time traveller behaviour change
- Thrust Calculator — emissions reporting
- Compliance Suite — regulatory readiness
- NetZero Forecaster — scenario planning
- Carbon Budgets — team-level emissions targets
- Spotlight — travel data analytics
What behaviour change interventions does EngageAI offer?
EngageAI delivers three intervention types, with estimated annual savings based on a mid-size programme of 15,000 flights:
- Airport to city — nudges travellers toward public transport or e-taxi for the final leg, saving $30 per journey with 70% lower emissions and 20 minutes faster into city centres. Estimated annual saving: $220k
- Early booking — encourages advance purchases of 2+ weeks, unlocking 21% cheaper fares on direct flights and avoiding layovers. Estimated annual saving: $40k
- Air to rail — identifies short-haul routes where rail is viable with comparable door-to-door journey times and up to 10% savings on total short-haul emissions. Estimated annual saving: up to $10k
Total estimated annual saving across all three: $270k. Calculate your savings.
Does EngageAI require a Thrust Calculator subscription?
No. EngageAI can be purchased and deployed as a standalone product. If you also use the Calculator, the two integrate seamlessly — but Calculator is not required to get started.
What channels does EngageAI use to reach travellers?
EngageAI delivers interventions via Microsoft Teams, Slack, WhatsApp, SMS, email, and point-of-sale booking tools, with TMC app integrations on the roadmap.
Can we start with a pilot?
Yes. Programmes of any size can start with a pilot. We ask for a minimum contract size of $10k to ensure enough volume to measure cost and emissions outcomes.
Who uses Thrust Carbon?
Thrust Carbon works with global enterprises including S&P Global, Toyota, and Novartis, and touches over $100bn of annual travel spend worldwide.
Who does Thrust Carbon partner with?
Thrust Carbon is deeply integrated into the business travel ecosystem, with partnerships across TMCs, OBTs, and technology platforms including SAP Concur, CWT, FCM, Altour, ATPI, Deem, and many more.
Methodologies & Data
What emissions methodologies does Thrust Carbon support?
Thrust Carbon supports a range of fuel-based, distance-based and spend-based methodologies including ICAO+, Google TIM, IATA CO2 Connect, Thrust Carbon Spend Methodologies, and DEFRA (DESNZ). All are customisable to your programme's needs. Learn more about our methodologies.
What is ISO 14083 and why does it matter?
ISO 14083:2023 is the international standard for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from transport chains. It is increasingly referenced in corporate reporting frameworks and regulatory requirements. Thrust Carbon was among the first providers to achieve ISO 14083 assurance and remains the only provider of ISO 14083 assured fuel, distance, and spend-based calculations.
What is the difference between fuel-based and distance-based emissions factors?
Distance-based factors (like standard DEFRA/DESNZ) use average emission intensity per kilometre (kgCO2e/km). Fuel-based factors use actual or modelled fuel consumption data at the carrier and route level, producing significantly more accurate results — typically showing 10–20% variance from distance-based estimates on the same journey.
Can we use different methodologies for different reporting purposes?
Yes. Clients can select any combination of methodologies — for example using a fuel-based method for more granular decarbonisation planning and maintain a distance-based method for consistent annual reporting. Explore our methodologies.
Assurance & Compliance
Is Thrust Carbon's data assured to ISO 14083?
Yes. Thrust Carbon's methodology suite is third party assured inline with the ISO 14064-3 verification standard in accordance with the ISO 14083:2023 standard, making it suitable for external audit and regulatory submission. Learn more about our Compliance Suite.
What regulations does the Compliance Suite support?
The Compliance Suite is designed to support CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), California's SB 253 and SB 261, and SBTi target-setting processes. It includes compliance checklists, flexible methodology selection, and an Assurance Admin role to streamline the audit process.
What is CSRD and does it affect business travel emissions?
CSRD requires large EU-listed companies to report Scope 3 emissions, which includes business travel. Companies in scope must report from 2025 (large companies) or 2026 (listed SMEs).
What are California's SB 253 and SB 261?
SB 253 (Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act) requires companies with over $1bn revenue doing business in California to report Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. SB 261 requires companies with over $500m revenue to disclose climate-related financial risks. Both include business travel in scope.
Can Thrust Carbon data be used directly in a CSRD submission?
Yes. The ISO 14083-assured methodology output and assurance ready data trail produced by Thrust Carbon is designed to be directly usable in regulatory submissions without requiring additional recalculation. Book a demo to discuss your reporting requirements.
